Sawan Month: Astrology, Sawan Somwar & Remedies for Moon, Shani & Doshas
Why Sawan Has Such Deep Astrological Significance
The monsoon arrives and something shifts — not just in the weather, but in the sky. The air turns green and cool. Sawan (also called Shravan), the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, falls somewhere between July and August each year. Devotees throng Shiva temples, fast on Mondays, offer water to the Shivalinga. But look at this month through the lens of Vedic astrology and the reasons go much deeper than tradition. Sawan is one of the most astrologically potent months of the year — and knowing how to work with it can genuinely ease some of the heaviest planetary burdens in your birth chart.
In Vedic astrology, every month, weekday, and deity maps onto a planet. Shravan nakshatra — the star that gives this month its name — is ruled by the Moon. The Moon governs the mind, emotions, mother, home, and intuition. When the Sun transits through Cancer (Karka Rashi) and then into Leo (Simha Rashi) during Sawan, the Moon's pull on daily life is at its strongest.
Shiva — the presiding deity of Sawan — is directly linked to Saturn (Shani) in Jyotish. Both share qualities of detachment, discipline, and the power to dissolve karma. Worshipping Shiva during Sawan is therefore one of the most time-honoured ways to soften Saturn's grip, including the dreaded Sade Sati.
This double connection — Moon and Saturn together — makes Sawan uniquely powerful for anyone dealing with:
- A weak or afflicted Moon in their kundali
- Sade Sati (Saturn transiting over the natal Moon)
- Shani Dasha or Antardasha
- Mangal Dosha, Kaal Sarp Dosha, or Pitra Dosha
- Persistent mental stress, anxiety, or emotional turbulence
Sawan Somwar: Why Mondays Matter So Much
Monday is Somvar — the day of Soma, another name for the Moon. Every Monday in Sawan is called Sawan Somwar, and there are usually four or five of them in the month. In Vedic astrology, performing a remedy on the day ruled by a planet amplifies its effect considerably.
Fasting on Sawan Somwar and offering Jalabhishek — water, milk, or Panchamrit — to the Shivalinga is not just religious ritual. It is a targeted remedy for a weak Moon. The Moon rules emotional stability, sleep, relationships with women, and mental peace. When the Moon is debilitated, conjunct Rahu or Ketu, or placed in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, you may feel chronically anxious, emotionally scattered, or oddly disconnected from yourself. Sawan Somwar is a real window to reset that.
What to Do on Each Sawan Somwar
- Wake before sunrise, bathe, and wear white — the Moon's colour
- Visit a Shiva temple or set up a Shivalinga at home
- Offer water mixed with raw milk, honey, and Gangajal while chanting Om Namah Shivaya
- Recite the Shiv Panchakshara Stotra or simply the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times
- Fast until evening — fruits, milk, and sabudana are traditional
- Light a white or silver diya with ghee in the evening
Even one Sawan Somwar done with genuine sincerity is considered more effective than the same ritual on an ordinary Monday.
Remedies During Sawan for Specific Planetary Issues
For a Weak or Afflicted Moon
The Moon responds to water, white things, and acts of nurturing. During Sawan:
- Donate white rice, milk, or white cloth — especially to an elderly woman
- Keep a small silver piece or moonstone near your pillow
- Chant Om Som Somaya Namah 108 times on Monday mornings
- Watch your speech. The Moon governs words that come from an emotional place, and harsh speech during this month can work against you
For Sade Sati (Saturn over Your Moon)
Sade Sati lasts seven and a half years. It brings pressure, restructuring, sometimes loss — but it is not a curse. It is karma being settled. Sawan offers a real opening to earn Shani's grace:
- Light a sesame oil lamp (til ka tel ka diya) every Saturday during Sawan
- Feed black sesame seeds mixed with jaggery to crows on Saturdays
- Recite the Shani Chalisa or Hanuman Chalisa — Hanuman is considered a protector from Shani — on Saturdays
- On Sawan Somwar, pray specifically to Shiva to ease Shani's weight. This combination is considered exceptionally powerful
- Serve labourers, the elderly, or people who work with iron or land. Saturn rules these groups
For Mangal Dosha
Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house and can create friction in relationships and marriage. During Sawan:
- Offer red flowers — especially red hibiscus — to Lord Shiva. Shiva is one of the few deities who can pacify Mars
- Chant Om Angarakaya Namah 21 times on Tuesdays
- Donate red lentils (masoor dal) or red cloth on Tuesdays
- Avoid conflict during the month. Mars flares in emotionally charged environments
For Kaal Sarp Dosha
Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart. It can cause recurring obstacles, a persistent sense of invisible resistance, delays in life milestones. Sawan is an ideal time to address it:
- Perform Rudrabhishek — the ritual bathing of the Shivalinga with Panchamrit — ideally on a Sawan Somwar
- Offer milk to a snake idol or a live snake (safely, at a temple). Rahu and Ketu are the serpent nodes
- Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times daily through the month
- A proper Kaal Sarp Dosha Puja at a Shiva temple — especially Trimbakeshwar or a local Jyotirlinga — during Sawan is considered highly auspicious
For Pitra Dosha
Pitra Dosha relates to ancestral karma and often shows up as a Sun-Rahu conjunction or affliction in the 9th house. During Sawan:
- Offer water (tarpan) to ancestors on any Monday or on Amavasya that falls within the month
- Feed Brahmins or donate food to the poor in memory of your ancestors
- Light a ghee diya near a Peepal tree on Saturdays
A Few Things Worth Keeping in Mind
Remedies in Vedic astrology work best when done consistently, with genuine intention, and without fear. Sawan is not a month to feel anxious about your chart. It is a month of grace. The planets are not punishing you. Certain energies in your life need balancing, and Sawan gives you extra support to do exactly that.
Remedies support — they do not replace. Keep doing the real, practical work. Saturn rewards effort. The Moon rewards emotional honesty. Sawan is the time to bring both together.
If you have been feeling the weight of Sade Sati, wondering why things feel stuck, or simply curious about what your birth chart says about this particular stretch of your life — this is a good month to look deeper. A proper kundali reading can tell you which planets need attention right now, what your current dasha means for your career, relationships, and health, and which of these remedies actually apply to your chart — not just a general prescription.
Your chart is unique to you. Sawan is the right time to understand it.
